What This Calculator Actually Tells You

Side hustles look great on paper. $3,000 a month in extra income sounds life-changing. But the number on your Stripe dashboard is not what lands in your bank account. This calculator strips away the hype and shows you the real number — after Uncle Sam takes his cut, after platform fees, after gas and materials and tools.

Honestly, the effective hourly rate is the number you should pay attention to. If you're making $18/hour after tax and expenses, is that really worth giving up your evenings and weekends? For some people yes — especially if you enjoy the work. For others, that extra hour might be better spent learning a higher-value skill.

Taxes on Side Hustle Income

This is where most people get blindsided. If you receive a 1099, you're on the hook for self-employment tax — that's 15.3% right off the top (Social Security + Medicare), on top of your regular income tax. Your side hustle income also pushes your total income higher, which means some of it gets taxed at your marginal rate. The calculator accounts for both.

If you receive a W2 from your side job (like part-time tutoring at a school), self-employment tax doesn't apply. That's why we ask. Tbh, a lot of people don't realize how much tax eats into their gig economy income until they file. Don't be that person who owes $3,000 in April.

Expenses Are Real

Every hustle has costs. Uber drivers pay for gas, maintenance, insurance, and depreciation. Etsy sellers pay for materials, listing fees, and shipping. Freelancers pay for software subscriptions, website hosting, and self-employment tax. The calculator includes a default expense ratio for each hustle type, but you can override it — your actual numbers may be higher or lower.

One thing I've noticed: people consistently underestimate their expenses. They remember the platform fee but forget the $50/month in software tools, the mileage, the random supplies. Be honest with yourself here or the calculator is lying to you.

Which Side Hustle Pays Best?

It depends on what you mean by "pays best." Uber gives you the most gross revenue potential but the worst effective hourly rate after expenses. Freelance has higher hourly potential but inconsistent work. Etsy can scale well if you productize, but the upfront time investment is brutal.

In my experience, the best side hustle is the one you can sustain for more than 3 months. A lot of people burn out on delivery driving after a few weeks. The "best" financial move is irrelevant if you hate doing it and quit. Pick something that aligns with your skills and schedule, not just the one with the highest number in this calculator.

How To Lower Your Tax Bill

If you're running a side hustle, you can deduct legitimate business expenses. That's not tax evasion — it's basic tax strategy. Mileage (65.5 cents/mile for 2024), home office deduction, a portion of your phone bill, software subscriptions, professional development. The key is keeping good records.

I'd recommend setting aside 25-30% of every side hustle payment in a separate account. If you owe less at tax time, great — you've got a bonus. If you owe more, you're prepared. Either way, you're not scrambling in April.
